Biography: |
Elwise Tobiah Rhys was born the son of two mages, Francisca and Hubert Rhys. The couple had just married after completing studies in the North Palace, but both were gripped by a deadly sickness and passed on to the afterlife. Elwise was sent to live with his paternal uncle Magvel, but as the babe Elwise grew into a young boy and entered the ranks of Magvel’s squires, the future mage began to hate his circumstances, rebelling against page duties and fencing training.
When Elwise was 10 years old, his grandmother Elenora came to visit during the summer. Seeing his misery as a squire training for knighthood that he would likely never attain, she requested Magvel’s permission to take him as her ward so that she might train him in the arcane traditions of his mother’s family, a request that Magvel readily agreed to. The next week, the young boy left his uncle’s castle on the Dasqua Plains to study with his grandmother at the village of Tellius deep in the Deku Forest, but his uncle requested that the boy spend the summer months with him and his family on the plains.
So every year, Elwise spent two summer months with his uncle Magvel and cousin Hayden. Hayden was a year Elwise’s senior, but despite being of the same lineage and near the same age, the two boys did not get along. Hayden was everything Elwise wanted to be—a “brute”, a “jock”, and a “womanizer” in his later years. Hayden constantly antagonized his cousin by pulling pranks and practical jokes on him that often led to Elwise’s extreme embarrassment.
During the summer of Elwise’s 17th year, one of Hayden’s pranks eventually went too far. He had invited Elwise to go swimming with himself and his friends. Seeing no harm in it, Elwise agreed to go, but stated that he would need to find a salve to keep himself from being sun burnt as he did so readily. Hayden offered his cousin a salve that he stated was indeed what the young scholar needed, but in reality was the exact opposite, a salve that was intended to cause one to tan. Trusting his cousin, Elwise applied it and enjoyed himself as he swam in the river with Hayden and the other boys from the castle. For the next week and a half, Elwise suffered the pains of the severe burns that he unknowingly magnified with the ointment. The scholar cursed his cousin, swearing his hatred for the other boy for betraying him so with the pain he had caused him. Elwise left immediately upon recovery, never again returning to his uncle’s castle, and not seeing his cousin Hayden again for 11 years.
With those events behind him and as the years past, Elwise grew from a boy to a young man and an excellent scholar under his grandmother’s tutelage. When he reached 21 years of age, Elwise studied for next 4 years at the academy in the North Palace under the same group of men and women that had instructed his parents, all of whom were extremely impressed by his adeptness. Upon returning home, his grandmother began to pass on to him the arcane magic that made up his family’s tradition while Elwise helped her run the local schoolhouse for the village and surrounding areas. While at the academy, Elwise had become enchanted with thoughts of the Triforce and the power held in it, and as he studied under his grandmother and learned more and more of it, the scholar began to long to search for a way to harness such a power. One day, a traveler came through the village and boarded at his grandmother’s residence. Elwise began to talk with the man, and after hearing his stories, the academic decided that should set out to study the Triforce and to seek out its power to see if it could be harnessed for the benefit of all of Hyrule. For two years Elwise has searched for this knowledge, but only in the past year has he found any true leads and gained pertinent information. However, every piece of knowledge he finds draws him closer and closer to his ultimate goal. |
